Round Floor Cushion Pattern

Ever since I finished the garter stitch round cushion at the beginning of March, I’ve had it in mind to create a floor cushion using the same pattern. I wanted to make the same tactile shape but to be bigger so it could be sat on.  Just to make the cushion more interesting to knit for me, I used a mixture of colours – it sort of reminds me of the 70s pouffes!

It was hard work to create a textile that is dense enough to take the punishment meted out to a floor cushion in a house full of boys. I still used the bulky yarn from the previous pattern held double but rather than the 9mm needles, I used 6mm ones. As I said, hard work, but a wonderfully thick textile is the result.

Materials:
You will need eight 100g of Bulky weight yarn.
Size 6mm knitting needles
Large blunt needle for sewing
Either foam or stuffing to fill the cushion.

This pattern makes a floor cushion 135cms in diameter.

Instructions:
Pattern uses 2 strands held together. If you use different colours, the pillow will look even more textured – I changed colour every quarter which is 8 repeats of the short-row pattern.

Cast on 70 stitches

1st row: Knit all stitches
2nd row: Knit all stitches.
3rd row: Knit 55 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
4th row: Knit 40 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
5th row: Knit 50 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
6th row: Knit 60 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
7th row: Knit 50 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
8th row: Knit 40 stitches, yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
9th row: Knit 55 stitches yarn forward, slip stitch knitwise, yarn back, slip stitch back, turn work and leave rest of stitches unworked.
10th row Knit all stitches.

You should have 70 stitches in all rows.

Repeat rows 3 to 10 until cushion measures 150 cm about 242 rows.

Do not cast off. Sew each live stitch to its counterpart cast on stitch. You will have a long tube. With blunt needle pull strand of yarn through each stitch at the edge of the tube and pull tight. Fill with stuffing until firm and shape as you’re filling. Repeat stitching into the last stitch at the edge of the tube to close hole.

Enjoy!
